Plant Genotyping Management System
Overview
SciMed was approached in 2019 to build the Plant Genotyping Management System, designed to help the client manage their process for genotyping information of plant genetic samples. Prior to engaging SciMed, the client relied on an in-house solution that lacked the necessary features, was difficult to maintain, and was time-consuming for staff.
Challenges
The client sought to replace their existing system for managing plant genetic sample data. Key challenges included:
Ensuring the new application would be easy to maintain and enhance for future needs.
Strategically integrating successful existing functionalities, phasing out ineffective ones, and developing entirely new features.
Successfully migrating all existing legacy data into the new application.
Building robust support for diverse file types and formats.
Our approach
When we began working on the Plant Genotyping Management System in 2019, our primary goal was to create a scalable solution that would genuinely improve how our client managed their plant genetic sample data. We started by thoroughly analyzing their existing application. This helped us gain a deep understanding of their current pain points, identify bottlenecks, and define the key new features needed for a more effective system.
Once we had a clear picture of their needs and aspirations, we moved into designing the new application. A top priority was building a robust multi-file import function capable of handling various file types and formats, which was critical for the client's workflow. As we developed these new features, we also carefully refined existing functionalities, enhancing their utility and phasing out cumbersome elements. This approach made data management significantly smoother and helped users transition easily to the new system. Throughout this process, we also implemented strong security measures to protect sensitive genetic data, ensuring both integrity and user access controls were robust.
Finally, we meticulously migrated all historical data from their previous application to the new one, ensuring no valuable legacy information was lost. Since launching the product in late 2019, we've continued our partnership, providing ongoing support and enhancements to ensure the system remains optimized for their evolving research needs.
Results
The Plant Genotyping Management System was successfully launched at the end of 2019. This new application has significantly enhanced the client’s capability to manage genotyping information of plant genetic samples, enabling them to:
Easily maintain the application and add new functionalities as research needs evolve.
Efficiently import diverse datasets.
Organize, analyze, and manage extensive research data with improved scalability and reliability.
